GWC SJ 2017 Graduation
We started off our graduation ceremony with a presentation on computational creativity by Dr. Ackerman, a computer science professor at San Jose State University.
The ladies were then presented with certificates and awards for their accomplishments. This group of girls won a trip to Zynga headquarters!

It's been yet another successful year for the club, from exciting lessons on topics from being brave to voice projection to robotics. We've had the opportunity to learn from some truly unique guest speakers. The girls got to design and code projects that matched their interests, including storytelling, music, fashion, and more!

Last of all, we would like to thank our amazing instructors Andy and Jossie (who unforunately couldn't be here on graduation day), and Mrs. Reed for helping the club reach its full potential.
Siri Guest Speaker: Maria Lin
Maria Lin is the creative director for Siri. She's heavily involved in creating Siri's unique quirky alien like personality. She worked closely with Warner Brothers to have Siri as the voice of 'Puter in Lego Batman where Siri made history by being the first AI to receive an acting credit in the movie. She gave us an insight into the work she does and how computer science and code can be used in a wide variety of fields.
Sam Lab Kits
The folks over at SAM Labs were nice enough to provide our club with a few of their Curious and Inventor Kits for the girls to tinker around with. Each kit had various blocks (sensors, buttons, motors, etc.) to be assembled together. We used drag-and-drop programming blocks in the SAM App to program the blocks, and the girls had a terrific time programming their own cars!

GWC SJ 2015 Summer Camp
The Girls Who Code San Jose Club extended the benefits of Girls Who Code to more wonderful young women through our 2015 Summer Camp!
Logistics:
Who: Girls going into grades 4 - 6
When: August 3rd - 7th, 9am to 4pm
Where: TechLab Education
Through this camp, the GWC SJ team provided girls with a free, collaborative and absorbing introductory coding education based on Level 1 of the national Girls Who Code curriculum. The camp was mainly geared towards students with no prior experience in coding, but plenty of students with experience applied as well!
We used MIT's Scratch application to teach the basics of coding and train students so that by the end of the week they created their own video game or project. We also introduced a but of Python so the girls could see the transition from simple drag-n-drop code to real-life application code. We brought in guest speakers, who spoke about a wide range on topics, including inspiring girls into computer science, the applications of computer science in different job fields, and the logical thinking required in a good computer scientist's mindset. We structured a mentor system of high school girls so that girls can learn from their older peers. Our teaching style is application and game-based, and we creates an environment where girls are empowered to believe in their potential and feel comfortable exploring their abilities in computer science. In addition, our curriculum includes a multitude of interactive activities to help extend the learning process.
The girls learned so much over the course of this week...
...and they presented their amazing projects...
...to their proud parents.

Many thanks to our wonderful volunteer team, who taught the girls and also to Techlabs, who provided facilities.

All in all, the camp was a huge success and the girls had a lot of fun!

...And so many more amazing memories to be made!
